Despite working full time for Family Planning New Zealand, David devotes the majority of his free time to helping the community as a Volunteer Event Medic with Wellington Free Ambulance. He has also previously been a volunteer rural fire fighter in different parts of New Zealand.

David has devoted endless hours to learning and training as a first responder so that he can help Wellingtonians enjoy their weekend activities knowing that if things go wrong, he is there to help.  He has also been the first on the scene to multiple community cardiac arrests as a Good Sam responder, starting CPR before the ambulance or Fire service arrives, giving the patient the best possible chance for recovery.

During the COVID 19 Lockdown, David took on a part-time role as a first responder with WFA alongside meeting the commitments of his full time job, in order to help WFA get more ambulances on the road to meet the increased needs of the Wellington Community during that uncertain time.  David does all these things with true passion and dedication for those he is helping, with no expectation of recognition or payment. A true community hero, we are proud to award him as a Tommy’s local hero for 2020.
