Officially a suburb of Lower Hutt, Wainuiomata is physically separated by the Wainuiomata Hill; it’s about 12 minutes by car from central Lower Hutt (or a very strenuous bicycle ride). It’s on a plain, surrounded by hills, and sited near several national parks with a road leading straight to a very dramatic and rugged coastline, with its own seal colony. Wainuiomata’s separation has developed a distinctive identity, with lots of sports groups, a large shopping centre, kindergartens, a primary school, secondary school and an excellent golf course. It’s a really family suburb, with a wide range of Christian churches.
